
Course Overview
Welcome to Beginner’s Korean! This course is designed for students with little to no prior knowledge of Korean. Throughout the semester, you will develop foundational skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in Korean. By the end of the course, you will be able to communicate in everyday situations and understand basic Korean grammar and vocabulary.

Course Learning Objectives:
by the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Read and write Hangul (Korean alphabet) fluently.
- Understand and use basic Korean vocabulary and sentence structures.
- Engage in simple conversations about daily activities, greetings, and self-introductions.
- Comprehend and respond to basic spoken Korean in everyday situations.
- Gain cultural insights into Korean traditions, etiquette, and social norms.
Course Structure:
This course consists of 14 modules, each focusing on a specific topic related to the Korean language and culture. Each module includes:
- Lecture recordings and interactive lessons
- Practice exercises and quizzes to reinforce learning
- Speaking & writing assignments
- Cultural insights and discussions
- A final project integrating language skills

- Required Textbook: Song, H. (2018). Sejong Korean Conversation 1. Seoul, South Korea: Yonsei University.
- Supplementary Materials: Handouts, online exercises, and recorded lessons (provided on Canvas)

Projects
K-Performance
- Create a video performance including YOUR FACE. You can perform alone or with classmates, family, or friends.
- The video should be at least one minute long.
- Performances must be in Korean. If you choose to dance, singing a Korean song is optional.
- Choose any performance idea you like. For instance, you can dance, sing a song, or explain Korean culture/history using pictures.
- If you read a poem or a children’s storybook or introduce Korean history/heritage, please be sure to add subtitles in both English and Korean.
- The deadline for submission is Tuesday, March 11, and we will watch the videos in class on Wednesday, March 12.
Storytelling
- Due date: April 13
- Use a word document and avoid converting to PDF
- 3. Please write your story in both Korean and English. (First line: Korean, second line: English)
- 4. Your story should consist of at least 12 sentences, including greeting, your name, and a closing remark.
